From the Editor

It is an extraordinary pleasure for me to introduce the newest offering of the Mona School of Business (MSB) in its continuing quest to better serve its constituents – the first issue of the MSB Review, a business magazine which will be published quarterly.

MSB Review is not an academic or refereed journal, but a business magazine catering to policy makers in the public and private sectors, current and aspiring corporate executives, opinion shapers in the business community, entrepreneurs, business school students, and researchers. MSB Review style embraces simplicity and clarity in order to facilitate assimilation and understanding.

As a country, our national ambitions are frequently obstructed by a variety of economic and social upheavals induced by an assortment of imported and home-grown ills. These predispose us to a multitude of business challenges and hazards that, left unmanaged, become serious threats to our very viability as a nation. The only constant, regardless of the forms in which these disruptions materialize, is the notion that tthese perpetual threats.

We will draw on the knowledge of local and international business leaders and policy makers, the talent resident at MSB and the wider University community, the experience of business analysts and journalists, and our distinguished alumni and enthusiastic students to make the magazine the access point for (1) great ideas about opportunities and insights into complex business issues (2) rigorous analysis of important activities in the exceedingly dynamic business environment and (3) stimulating intellectual exchanges to objectively explore and resolve disputes and controversies with arguments and counter-arguments.

The theme of the inaugural issue “Recovery of the Jamaican economy after recession” and the cover story is illustrative of the essential objectives of relevance and timeliness which will characterize all issues. The magazine will maintain an ongoing focus on five sectional themes: Policy, Entrepreneurship, Strategy & Solutions, Technology, and Finance and Economy.

The Mona School of Business, by its very intimacy with the problems of, and the vulnerabilities that confront Jamaica and the region, makes the priorities of the nation deeply rooted in its scholarly pursuits and focus. The launch of the MSB Review manifests this commitment and provides yet another opportunity to contribute authentic business solutions.
